What does the free consultation consist of?
The consultation allows me to understand where you are on the xx of change (pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance. I want to find out what you have tried in the past, where you are right now, and what you hope to accomplish moving forward. Prospective clients will also fill out a few forms, including a PARQ+ and a detailed questionnaire, so that I can understand any physical limitations you may have. I also want to determine your strengths, weaknesses, and overall preferences regarding exercise so that the programs we build are ones you will want to do. The evaluation combined with your goals will help me determine if I feel you will benefit from the Swole Vikings program.
How does on-line personal training work?
Following the free consultation, I will craft an 8-week program from scratch that is designed for you. We will discuss the program (via Skype, Facetime, etc.) to explain the process and to answer any questions. Every exercise in your crafted plan includes a detailed video showing you exactly how to complete the movement. You can also send me a video of you performing the exercise to receive form assessments and any necessary corrections. Once you get started exercising independently, you can email me at any point and receive an answer within 24 hours (usually much quicker). For most clients, emailing weekly and communicating via Skype or Facetime every two weeks works best but the frequency will be determined based on the client’s needs and preferences.
How does in-person personal training work?
If you live in the greater Grand Strand area of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, or plan to be one of the 19 million annual visitors, then you can train with Bill one-on-one. I provide all of my in-person sessions at Sky Fitness, which you will need to become a member prior to training with me. Sky Fitness offers an extensive range of equipment and facilities that allows me to create a varied and effective exercise program. In the first session, I will conduct a thorough assessment that will set the stage for a more individualized program. From there, most clients do 1-to-3 in-person sessions per week.
Can I do a hybrid program of in-person personal training and on-line?
Yes! If you possess the desire to improve, I will work with whatever fits your goals, schedule, and budget. My goal is to provide an individually tailored approach that offers the right solution for you.
Can I do my in-person personal training sessions with a friend?
Yes. The only restriction is they must go through the acceptance process and become a client as well.
Do you work with both women and men?
Yes. Usually I work with more women than men simply because that tends to be the trend among most personal trainers. Most are in the 40s and 50s but that varies on occasion for no particular reason. At this point I do not focus on senior fitness but that could change in time as the U.S. population continues to age.
Why do you limit who you work with?
Most on-line personal training consists of selling a recycled, one-size-fits-all, cookie-cutter program that is of little to no benefit for the buyer. Providing a training program that is worthwhile for the client and then coaching them through the process requires time. With only so many hours in a day, that limits the number of people I can work with (usually about 12 at any given time) to ensure the proper amount of attention.
Do I have to join a gym?
No. Although a gym membership can provide greater options in program design, we can work together to create an effective plan using body weight exercises and/or any equipment you may have.
Do I have to alter what I eat?
Probably, it a lot of it depends on what you hope to accomplish and how quickly you want to see results. Building muscle at any age requires an adequate intake of protein. If your goal is to lose weight, chances are good you will need to improve your diet. While I am not a registered dietician, I am a certified nutritionist who can provide nutritional advice and information that can help you get the most out of your training program.
Does your program offer any other advantages?
Yes. In addition to training programs and nutritional advice, I also work with clients on developing a more positive mental approach. So many people engage in negative self-talk that prevents them from making positive progressions in numerous areas of their lives. Some clients require more assistance than others in this area, which is another example of how every training program consists of different components. As always, the goal is create the best YOU—not the best anyone else.
Do you train bodybuilding competitors?
No. That is not my focus. I work with people who want to get the most out of life by being able to move better, improve their strength and energy, and become healthier. Some have weight loss goals, but most simply want to get in better physical condition.
How much does it cost?
On-line training costs can be found here.
In-person training costs are $60 per hour at Sky Fitness of Myrtle Beach (which does not include the type of membership you select). An introductory package of three 30-minute training sessions for $99 is available, which works well for those clients who are just beginning their fitness journeys.
Does it matter how fit I am?
No. Everyone’s starting point is unique to their situation. The only requirement is the desire to make improvements and to be open to coaching and recommendations. Those who want to question, argue and/or make excuses should look elsewhere.
